Why Does This Still Happen When Weed Is Legal?

DrugBust.JPG

With all the news reports about medicinal marijuana grows on the rise, you’d think anyone who wanted to smoke weed would have a prescription by now, and maybe their own little grow operation. Certainly, many do. But an absolutely phenomenal seizure at our border tells another tale.

A week ago, Mexican authorities confiscated seven tons of marijuana on its way from Tijuana to California. Think about that. Seven tons is close to a quarter-million one ounce bags of marijuana. That’s enough for every man, woman and child in San Diego to get high for a week. Honestly, I ran the numbers.

The weed was loaded into trucks in almost 700 packages and the value was estimated to be $6.5 million.

Remember when we voted on making marijuana legal? Weren’t we promised that illegal trafficking would fall and we’d save money by not locking up people or dedicating resources to finding and prosecuting marijuana cases? Well, maybe the mom and pop busts have lessened, but the numbers and amounts of illegal marijuana certainly hasn’t fallen off.

What seems to be happening is that California (along with Mexico) has just become the supplier of choice for the rest of the nation. We import it; we grow it. And what we don’t export directly flows through to other customers. Granted, other states, like Arizona, have the same problem with Mexican drugs, but we thought we’d escape some of the nonsense when we voted for medical marijuana.

So now the push is to ease off even more on drug policy, to make more substances in small quantities legal to possess.

The bottom line might be that the appetite for drugs in the US is much bigger than expected and growing. Where will it end?
